Talk on Union Budget & Finance Bill 2014-15
The Cochin Chamber of Commerce and Industry organised a post budget talk on the Union Budget and the Finance Bill 2014-15 on 14th July 2014 at Hotel Dream Cochin.
Mr.Homi P.Ranina, eminent tax expert and Supreme Court Lawyer was the key speaker.
Mr. H.P. Ranina has been practicing as an Attorney for more than twenty-five years. He is also a qualified Chartered Accountant. Mr. Ranina’s expertise is in the fields of Direct Taxes and the Foreign Exchange Laws of India. He has been counselling corporate clients and has been actively associated with several joint ventures and foreign collaborations for international clients who have business ventures in India. He has also addressed more than 500 professional Seminars in India and abroad on Taxation and Foreign Exchange Laws, as well as on investment opportunities in India.
Mr. Ranina has been associated with Forum of Free Enterprise for over three decades and is a member of its Council of Management. He is also a Trustee of Nani A. Palkhivala Memorial Trust.
Mr.Ranina said that the challenge before the new Government is that the Tax revenues collected have been going down and the Tax-GDP ratio has actually fallen in the last 3 years. Considering the limited time at his disposal, the Finance Minister Mr.Arun Jaitley has put forth a set of measures to kick start the economy.Mr.Ranina opined that the Finance Minister has tried to assuage the feelings of foreign investors who were disheartened about the investment climate in India. Mr.Ranina said in his concluding remarks that if the Modi Government can fulfil even half of the promises made in this year’s budget, Indian economy will be put on a sound footing and may emerge as the third largest economy in the world by 2020.
